Comfort Reading

Some days arenWTTemptation‘t worth getting out of bed for. Sometimes you know it from the second the alarm goes off, other times it takes a bit longer, but there are days that are just a waste of space. And the big problem with a crap day is that it lingers, leaving a dingy miasma on the next few days as well.

This is when I like to pull on some comfy clothes – if I can get away with p.j.’s that’s my preference – and curl up with some comfort authors.

My first choice is ALWAYS Welcome to Temptation by Jennifer Crusie. Always. It never fails to make my mood lighten. I like to follow it with Faking It, just because I love Davy. Then, depending on my frame of mind, I’ll wash away the lingering gray with either Julia Quinn’s Bridgertons or Nalini Singh’s Psy-Changeling universe. If the pall still hovers, I break out the big guns and have a J.D Robb marathon. There are very few bad days that can stand up to Eve and Roarke!

So, who do you turn to for comfort?

Where’s the love?

loveI was listening to a friend bemoan the lack of romance in her relationship, and it got me thinking. Is there a simple checklist of things you can do to keep the spark alive? The answer is simple: yes.

Five easy, non-expensive ways to show your partner that you still think the sun rises and sets on them. Taking your partner for granted is not unusual when you’ve been together for a while. Occasionally, it doesn’t hurt to throw some extra effort into the mix.

1. Hold their hand. Watching TV, in the car, walking down the street. Pick the right time, reach out, and hold hands.

2. Kiss. Been at work all day? Get home and have a smooch. It can even be a light peck.

3. Call. Pick your time and call your partner just because you want to hear their voice. It might be a thirty-second call, but isn’t it nice to know someone is thinking of you?

4. Surprise! Bring them a small gift. Something they like, maybe a food item like chocolate or ice-cream. It doesn’t have to be expensive, but it does have to be thoughtful. Don’t go for the generic.

5. Say I love you. Sometimes we forget that words are important, too.

OMG…!

winky faceIf you look at the image for this post, you’ll see that it’s actually a very humorous indictment of future generations and their ability to use punctuation. I saw it on facebook, and it certainly made me laugh, so I thought I’d borrow it to share. Then, the other day, something happened to make me feel a million years old.

I was with my family, which some of you know can be a lot of people. Somebody said something stupid (it was so trivial I don’t even remember what it was) and one of my cousins said “Oh, my God.” My eight-year-old cousin said “OMG”.

I didn’t even know that people actually said OMG. I mean, in chat or text, sure. But out loud? No way. It’s the same number of syllables! It’s not saving any time or effort, really. Is it just me, or does this seem wrong? And even if it is saving a syllable or two, surely it’s not that difficult to say the complete word…after all, most words in the English language aren’t that long. The longest word in this post is four syllables!

Please, someone tell me that the future is not going to be filled with people saying “OMG”, “Totes” and “Whatevs”.

Fairytales vs Romance

B&BFor years and years, when asked what my favorite fairytale is, I’ve always answered ‘Beauty and the Beast’. Why? I didn’t have a clue.

The other day I watched the Disney movie, Enchanted, for the first time. For those of you who haven’t seen it, it’s a fabulous amalgamation of the classic Disney movies, the ultimate fairytale with a modern twist. I loved it right off. The fact that Patrick Dempsey is in it didn’t hurt, of course.

The point is, after seeing the movie, it struck me why B&B has always been my favorite. The hero and heroine actually get to know each other.

Think about it. Cinderella and her prince fall in love during a dance. Snow White and Sleeping Beauty both meet their princes when they wake from comas. Ariel can’t talk with her prince, and so he ends up almost marrying someone else (depending on the version. I dislike the one where he actually does marry someone else and Ariel dies).

But only in Beauty and the Beast do our hero and heroine actually talk to each other before the happy ever after. They talk, they play, eat and read and get to know who they really are, both together and apart (okay, so I’m investing this story with depth that may not actually be there, but you know what I mean). This is a story that appeals to a modern audience. Once upon a time, ending up with a Prince, no matter who he was, may have been enough to ensure happy ever after, but personally I want to know who I’m waking up with the day after the wedding.

So, I put on my B&B dvd to watch the magic again…and noticed exactly how clever the people at Disney are. That wonderful scene, the one where Belle and The Beast are dancing in the ballroom? That scene that always made me sigh and wish that the days of ballrooms and gowns and dancing would return? That ultimately romantic, wonderful moment in time? Well, it’s been replicated, in non-animated human format, at the end of Enchanted. And it’s just as eminently romantic and sigh-worthy.

If you haven’t seen Beauty and the Beast, or Enchanted, I strongly recommend that you run out and buy copies. Don’t bother with renting, it will cost you more in the long run!

So, if I had to choose the fairytale or romance, I want romance. I want the moments that make your chest ache. The happy ever after is something my man and I can work on together.

Shakespeare on Love and Lust

Bards insultsEarlier this year I was lucky enough to visit the UK, and while I was there I, of course, went to Stratford-Upon-Avon. One of the purchases I made in the Bard’s gift shop was a tiny little book called The Bard’s Guide to Abuses and Affronts. After all, who can resist the opportunity to insult someone in Elizabethan?

Imagine my further delight when I discovered a section subtitled Love and Lust. Today I’d like to share some of these with you. Believe me when I tell you they are truly inspiring, and I’m already writing a sex scene based around one.

“She adulterates hourly.” King John

“That kiss is comfortless as frozen water to a starved snake.” Titus Andronicus (and ouch!)

“I had rather hear my dog bark at a crow than a man swear he loves me.” Much Ado about Nothing

“Such is the simplicity of man to harken after the flesh.” Love’s Labour’s Lost

“Being no other but as she is, I do not like her.” Much Ado about Nothing

I’d hate to have gotten into a slanging match with Shakespeare. From what I’ve read of his, he had a real way with insults!

It’s all about Personal Style

Fashion imageMost of the time, when I think of style, it’s about writing style. This time, however, I’m branching out into the mainstream, and thinking about fashion style.

I was shopping with some friends not long ago, and one of them pointed out a skirt to the other. “That would look so good on you,” she said. My other friend looked at it and replied, “It’s not really my style.” They were both right, it would have looked fantastic but she’d never worn anything like it before. However, it got me thinking: what’s my style?

A review of my wardrobe did nothing but confuse me. There are some gorgeous, delicate sundresses I bought when I was going through a regency reading marathon; the chunky boots and worn-in jeans from my motorcycle club ebook extravaganza; cargo pants and plain tees I found while reading that commando series; track suits and tank tops from the extremely comfortable time I worked my way through books starring athletes, despite the fact that exercise is completely anathema to me. There are more examples I can give, but I think you’ve noticed the pattern by now.

I borrow my style from the characters in books I’m reading.

This is a vaguely terrifying thought. How can I have no style of my own? I asked a friend, and she was extremely unhelpful. Instead of sagely soothing my fears (as the characters in books do), she laughed and advised me not to read anything starring naturists. Ha ha.

Desperate, I rifled through my wardrobe, looking for clothing that doesn’t correlate to a book I was reading at the time of purchase. It took a while, but eventually I found it. My personal style. My weakness. I may buy them to match characters, but I also buy a LOT just for me.

Shoes.

Specifically, pretty shoes. Shoes in bright colors. Shoes with bling. Shoes that are completely impractical and will make my feet scream with agony after just a short time. So I guess, if we judge personal style by my shoes, we can say that I’m mostly the girly type. I can live with that.

So, what does your wardrobe say about you?
