A Real Location that Inspired Escape Clause
by Mary Billiter
In May 2016, I was recovering from my second major surgery in the treatment of my breast cancer. My husband, Ron brought my children to the hospital each day of my recovery. At night he’d return. He wanted to ensure that if I ever woke I wouldn’t be alone.
My spirits were fading with each surgery. Ron knew and arrived one evening with a Starbucks coffee and his cell phone.
He scrolled through pictures of his beloved Oregon coast –and specifically Newport.
“We’ll go there.” He spoke in terms of a future I wasn’t as convinced existed.
Still, when visiting hours ended, I’d be alone in my hospital room with my thoughts. I turned them to the Oregon Coast. I dreamt about rushing toward the ocean with my arms outstretched like I could catch the white-capped waves. That dream got me through myriad lonely nights at the hospital.
So when my husband of three years brought my little boy and me to the coast with his Oregon-based family it was better than anything I had imagined. The Oregon coast was a respite and renewal.
We toured Yaquina Head lighthouse and I knew then that it was where romance began and ended. As we drove away from our week-long vacation, I began writing this story.
I returned home where I failed another mammogram and endured more painful procedures. But the Oregon Coast had revived my spirits.
And by December, I was victorious in my battle against breast cancer. It gave my family the happily ever after we long sought.
So “Escape Clause” is for every breast cancer survivor and those still in the fight. Don’t give up. The best is yet to come.
And for those that want a little escapism, this book is for you!

Living in Nashville with his daughter, Katelyn, single dad Derrick Collins’s main goal is to provide a good life for his daughter. With no social life to speak of, he knows it’s time for a change. He just needs to find the perfect woman who will complete his happy family. The problem is he’s already met her and let her go.

Mary Jane Evans’s life took a path she could only dream of. Though leaving her home in Nashville meant saying goodbye to childhood friends, family, and the first man she ever loved. Now she has to choose if she will return or continue her new journey.

With a decision to make, is it possible for two lost loves to find their way back to each other or are there too many curves in the road?

Most people fall in love several times over a lifetime, but one always sticks out more than others, whether you end up with them or they are the one who got away.
When I was five, I thought I was in love with my best friend, Jimmy, who lived next door. That changed when he fed my favorite Barbie doll to the dog, breaking my heart. When I was ten, I fell for my schoolmate Robbie when he helped me up after someone pushed me into the mud. My heart later shattered when my dad told me we were moving to the big city of Nashville from our small backwoods town in Kentucky, and I had to say goodbye to him. At fifteen, I fell for Marcus Jacobs, the smartest guy in school. He was our valedictorian, and I never told him how I felt. He “came out of the closet” after high school. And then I turned twenty-one and met Derrick Collins.
Derrick was the guy who made me realize that I’d never known love before I met him. Reading about toes-tingling, heart-stopping kisses, and romantic gestures, I always questioned whether such things existed. My lifelong question was answered the first time we kissed, and I felt it course through my body from my lips straight to my toes with electric pulses racing everywhere in between.
Growing up, I always had an issue with weight and never felt comfortable with the opposite sex. Puberty hit and my waistline expanded more than my breasts. Luckily, I had a growth spurt around sixteen. I was taller than average, five eight to be exact, with blonde hair and light green eyes, with that I was happy. My pants size was a different story. My hips were curvy, and my breasts caught up to them, although they didn’t point forward as much as my hips pointed outward.
With friends like mine who built my confidence every day, I thought I knew what it meant to feel beautiful. It wasn’t until the day I felt Derrick’s undeniable passion for me that I truly felt like the goddess Cameron always tried to convince me I was. I’d tried every diet known to man to be skinny; it just was not in the cards for me, and I’d come to terms with that fact. My body may not have been perfect, but I ate right, and I wasn’t lazy. It was just my luck I had a crappy metabolism that allowed me to maintain a softer, slightly rounder stomach. Did it frustrate me? Yes. I would’ve loved to be one of those women who ate anything they wanted and never gained a pound. However, life didn’t deal me that hand, and I’d become content with myself.
It’s true that having a boyfriend wasn’t the most important thing in life, but it sure was nice. I loved my time with Derrick. I didn’t need him to make me happy; I wanted it. Derrick made the sky bluer, chocolate taste sweeter, and the sun shine brighter, at least it seemed that way with him in my life. Prince Charming had nothing on this man. At times I became discouraged, but Derrick was there to make me laugh. Other than Cameron, no other man had told me I was beautiful in a way that made me believe it. He was practically perfect in every way, like a male version of Mary Poppins. Wow, that wasn’t sexy I guess, but if Derrick was one thing for sure, it was sexy.

This wasn’t how it was supposed to be….

They met at a wedding, Todd the only man wearing jeans, Jessica the beauty with a troubled background. Settled into married life after falling in love, they have so many things left to do in life. They think they have so much time… until Jessica and Todd’s average married life comes to a halt on a snowy back road. When their truck careens down an embankment, they find themselves in a life-or-death situation. With rescue seeming impossible, they cling to the only hope they have left: their love for each other.
As they fight for survival, their connection carries them through the biggest challenge of their lives. Memories and regrets swirl around the couple as they finally take a moment to reflect on what they’re doing in life.
There’s one big, icy question that haunts them, though: Is this where their story will end?

Together, they were a functioning but crazy couple, living in the adult world of responsibility but straying from the normal every now and then to experience life to the fullest.
Together, they could get through anything. She had to cling to that.
She perked up at the thought of having some temporary relief from the cold as Todd wriggled to get closer to the driver seat, being careful to not jiggle his leg too much. He reached over to the keys, turning it with a whispered “Please.”
Nothing happened.
“Shit.” He slammed the dashboard in frustration. His temper was always one of his flaws.
“Let me try,” she uttered, reaching for the key in his hand.
“It’s not working.”
“Move.”
She shoved him away, trying the key herself, whispering “Please.” If her toes weren’t so damn cold, she’d cross them all in hopes of the engine coming to life.
She turned the key and laughed at her luck. The engine chugged to life.
“Wrong again,” she gloated, a huge grin on her face.
“You know, I should push you out in the snow.”
The smile stifled itself at his words, even as the sound of the engine underscored her hope, emphasized the soon-to-be warmth that would be theirs.
She didn’t respond to his statement, lost in her own bout of regrets and guilt.
“Jess?” he asked finally, concern in his voice.
She warmed her hands in front of the heater. It already felt heavenly, even though it wasn’t even close to being completely warm. Finally, she responded in a disconsolate voice, “Probably should. This is my fault.”
“Hey, stop it. Don’t blame yourself.” He put a hand on her arm, shaking her a bit.
“If I’d listened….”
“We might still have ended up here, or worse. Things could be worse. We could’ve hit a tree head-on. By some luck, we landed right between them. It’s all okay. It’s all going to work out.” He, too, rubbed his hands in front of the heater.
“I love you,” she whispered, still feeling guilty, still not quite believing him. This was her fault. She’d messed up, big-time. Who knew what price they’d pay for it.
“I love you too.”
She smiled again, leaning against him as she basked in the warmth of the heat radiating through her fingers. They sat, wordless, reveling in the simple but heavenly feeling.
Todd interrupted the silence a few moments later. “You do know, when we get out of this, I’m never letting you live this down.”
She groaned, shaking her head as she pulled away from him. “You just said it’s not my fault.”
“Of course I did. Because right now, I can’t blame you or I look like a dick. Later, though, oh man, is this going to be a great addition to my amateur comedic stand-up at parties.”

A high school English teacher, an author, and a fan of anything pink and/or glittery, Lindsay’s the English teacher cliché; she love cats, reading, Shakespeare, and Poe.
She currently lives in her hometown with her husband, Chad (her junior high sweetheart); their cats, Arya, Amelia, Alice, and Bob; and their Mastiff, Henry.
Lindsay’s goal with her writing is to show the power of love and the beauty of life while also instilling a true sense of realism in her work. Some reviewers have noted that her books are not the “typical romance.” With her novels coming from a place of honesty, Lindsay examines the difficult questions, looks at the tough emotions, and paints the pictures that are sometimes difficult to look at. She wants her fiction to resonate with readers as realistic, poetic, and powerful. Lindsay wants women readers to be able to say, “I see myself in that novel.” She wants to speak to the modern woman’s experience while also bringing a twist of something new and exciting. Her aim is for readers to say, “That could happen,” or “I feel like the characters are real.” That’s how she knows she’s done her job.
Lindsay’s hope is that by becoming a published author, she can inspire some of her students and other aspiring writers to pursue their own passions. She wants them to see that any dream can be attained and publishing a novel isn’t out of the realm of possibility.

“I guess that’s the thing about high school reunions, though. They make you snap a little.”
In the ten years since high school graduation, Maylee’s career, living arrangements, family, and especially her love life are at a standstill. When her twin brother, Mitch, falls for her high school enemy at their ten-year reunion, Maylee’s life is catapulted into chaos.
Maylee’s hatred for the blonde-haired Josephine isn’t the only thing she discovers at her reunion. Benson Drake, the introvert from high school, has matured into a sexy intellect. Now a writer and bartender, Benson’s grown into a man with a perfect balance of quirky wit and sex appeal. After a wardrobe malfunction, a spy mission gone wrong, and a dangerous cup of coffee, Maylee and Benson explore something they never even thought about during senior year. Along the way, they find out that reconnecting with the past can change you… or maybe just help you find your true self.

I guess that’s the thing about high school reunions, though. They make you snap a little. At least I can admit to it. This has to be the first step to admitting psychosis, right?
Mitch thinks I’ve taken it too far. Shauni, of course, thinks I’m doing the right thing.
“Show those snotty jerks just what you’ve become,” she told me yesterday. “Especially the blonde. Show her you’ve won.”
I’d smiled, munching on my lunch of celery and carrot sticks in my attempt to shed a few more ounces of water weight. Nevertheless, the whole time I was asking myself a very hard question: Have I really won? If I’m going to so much trouble to fool my classmates into thinking I’ve done so well for myself, aren’t there deeper problems than booblessness and a flabby waistline?
Maybe the problem isn’t my body type, my hair, or any of it. Maybe it’s because at twenty-eight, I thought life would be a little different, a little bit more… grown-up.
Looking in the mirror, however, I know I can’t pretend to be all introspective and mature about it. Even though I know it’s ridiculous, there’s a part of me deep down that does want to show her I’ve done okay for myself, no matter what. I want the girl who tortured me in high school, who convinced me I was a mousey nerd, to realize I blossomed.
Even if it is a bit of a lie. Or a lot of a lie.
“Let’s go,” Mitch yells from the living room. I sigh.
No more introspection. It’s go time.
It’s time to face my past.

Ellie Collins has always been good at hiding her emotions, but when they threaten to overwhelm her, she channels them into her work. After leaving behind the first person to capture her heart, Ellie’s heartbreak leaves her more motivated than ever before. She has one more job to take care of and nothing left to lose.
Alex King is determined and stubborn. Unable to walk away from the woman who’s left him dazed, his life is about to get crazier than ever. Through the thick fog of deception, both Ellie and Alex have a decision to make that will change their lives forever. They can only hope that their choices are not taken from them before it’s too late.
When the moves are made and the positions set, who will finally deliver checkmate?

The flight felt like it took forever. He was only still when the flight attendant told him he needed to sit and put his seat belt on. Even then his knee was bouncing, or he was tapping his fingers on the armrest. There was no word on Ellie, and that was driving him completely insane. He was terrified that something had gone wrong.

Finally, the plane touched down and he was allowed to turn his phone on again. There were a few missed calls from Phoebe and Phil. They were probably wondering where he was. He hadn’t bothered to tell anyone he was leaving the restaurant, let alone leaving the country. He wasn’t about to call them and explain himself. He had more pressing matters to deal with.

There was a black SUV waiting on the tarmac outside the jet. It was the same one that had taken his luggage the first time he’d landed in England. The driver came around and opened the door for him. He slid into the back seat and the door closed, shrouding him in darkness. When the driver took his seat behind the wheel and pulled away from the jet, Alex was tempted to ask about Ellie, but refrained.

Every minute that passed felt like an hour instead. He wanted to get to the hospital and find out if she was okay or if she’d even survived the surgery. He needed to know how the hell she managed to get shot.

After what seemed like an age, they finally pulled up at the hospital. He didn’t even wait for the car to come to a complete stop before he was out the door. The anxiety bubbling in his chest only multiplied when he stepped inside the hospital. He had no idea where he was going or how to get where he needed to be. A man appeared out of the group of people, coming toward him.

“Alex King?” he asked, startling him.

“Yes.” Alex glanced at the large, muscular man in front of him.

“This way.”

He didn’t hesitate to follow the man. They walked to the elevators and stepped inside. The man pressed a floor number and the doors slid shut. Again, he was tempted to ask if the man knew anything about Ellie, because he obviously worked for them or with them, but he resisted. He was extremely antsy as the elevator rose to the chosen floor. He wasn’t sure if it was adrenaline or anxiety pumping through his veins anymore. All he knew was he was terrified.

As soon as it stopped, he pushed through the crack of the opening doors. He spotted Luke standing in the hallway, talking on the phone. He didn’t bother to wait for the guy who led him to the floor. Instead, he rushed toward Luke, ignoring the fact that he was on the phone.

“Is she okay?”
