OMG…!

winky faceIf you look at the image for this post, you’ll see that it’s actually a very humorous indictment of future generations and their ability to use punctuation. I saw it on facebook, and it certainly made me laugh, so I thought I’d borrow it to share. Then, the other day, something happened to make me feel a million years old.

I was with my family, which some of you know can be a lot of people. Somebody said something stupid (it was so trivial I don’t even remember what it was) and one of my cousins said “Oh, my God.” My eight-year-old cousin said “OMG”.

I didn’t even know that people actually said OMG. I mean, in chat or text, sure. But out loud? No way. It’s the same number of syllables! It’s not saving any time or effort, really. Is it just me, or does this seem wrong? And even if it is saving a syllable or two, surely it’s not that difficult to say the complete word…after all, most words in the English language aren’t that long. The longest word in this post is four syllables!

Please, someone tell me that the future is not going to be filled with people saying “OMG”, “Totes” and “Whatevs”.
